Bursitis or tendon injuries around the hip are relatively common and can be due to numerous conditions. The most common is hip arthritis, with the second most common being inflammation due to muscle tightness over the hip or an injury.

It can cause a lot of pain, and in most instances, it settles with physio and stretches. In some cases, it needs injections which can either be ultrasound guided cortisone or Platelet Rich Plasma, and holistic assessment with a physiotherapist looking at your alignment and the way you walk.

Rarely the condition may need surgery, and the role here is primarily if there is a complete tear to one of the underlying main muscles into the hip, the gluteus medius. Most cases settle without surgery, although the timeline to improve is variable.
